Understanding 2D Lamps: GR8, GR10q & 2GX13 Explained

Why Are 2D Lamps So Confusing?

If you've ever searched for a replacement 2D lamp, you've probably seen terms like GR8, GR10q and 2GX13.

Although these lamps can look similar, they are designed for different fittings and are not interchangeable.

Choosing the correct base type is essential to ensure your light fitting operates safely and performs as intended.

What Is a 2D Lamp?

A 2D lamp is a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) named after its distinctive flat, square shape.

These lamps have been widely used in:

  • Homes
  • Offices
  • Commercial buildings
  • Emergency lighting
  • Healthcare facilities

Their design provides even light distribution while fitting into compact light fittings.

GR8 (2-Pin)

The GR8 base has 2 pins and is commonly used with fittings that have an integrated starter.

Typical wattages include:

  • 16W
  • 28W
  • 38W

Always confirm the wattage and fitting before replacing your lamp.

GR10q (4-Pin)

The GR10q base has 4 pins and is used with electronic ballasts.

Common wattages include:

  • 16W
  • 28W
  • 38W

Although the lamp shape is similar to GR8, the base is completely different.

2GX13 Circline Lamps

Unlike traditional 2D lamps, 2GX13 is a circular (circline) fluorescent lamp.

These lamps are commonly found in:

  • Ceiling lights
  • Commercial lighting
  • Residential fittings

The circular shape and four-pin centre connector make them easy to identify.
